Howdy Manco!!

Michael Curtiz was a Hungarian born film director, who began his career directing silent films back in 1912 under the name Kertesz Mihaly. It wasn't until he immIgrated to the U.S.A. and Hollywood, that he began to receive recognition. His best years were the 40's and 50's, in which he directed films like, Captain Blood, The Charge Of The Light Brigade, The Adventures Of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart, The Sea Wolf, Santa Fe Trail, White Christmas with Bing Crosby and The Comancheros with the Duke. He even directed King Creole and Kid Galahad with Elvis. With his thick Hungarian accent and his lack of fluent English, he was often misunderstood and misquoted. While dressing down a prop man, for failing to do as Curtiz told him, Curtiz was quoted as having said" if I wanted an idiot to do it, I would have done it myself". He is quoted as having told a stagehand that he wanted a "poodle in the scene.". When the stagehand brought him a poodle, he responded, " no, I meant a "poodle of water". Judging by some of the classic films he directed and the fact that he won an Academy Award for Best Director for Casablanca, he seems to have had better luck communicating with actors.

Also today:

Howard Hughes (1905-1976) was an aviator, an aircraft manufacturer, a film director and mogul, among other things. He held several aviation records, directed and produced a number of films such as Hell's Angels, The Front Page, Scarface (1932), The Outlaw, and The Conqueror. He dated several of Hollywood's biggest actresses, and was married to Terry Moore (Mighty Joe Young) and Jean Peters. He built one of the world's largest aircraft, the H-4 Hercules, known as the Spruce Goose. He acquired the controling stock of RKO studios in 1948, and sold the studio in the mid 1950s. He was in a near fatal airplane crash in 1946, while piloting an experimental plane. In the years that followed, he displayed at time very erratic behavior, and suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which would lead him into a life of seclusion in the 1960s and early '70s. At the time of his death from kidney failure, he was barely recognizable, with very long hair, a shaggy beard, long fingernails, and weighing only 90 lbs. His condition was believed to be a result of addiction to prescription drugs.

Ava Gardner (1922-1990) was in a number of films from 1941-1946, most of them uncredited, until her big break in The Killers (1946) with Burt Lancaster. She then went on to play in the films Mogambo (the 1953 remake of Red Dust, which earned he an Oscar nomination), Show Boat (1951), Ride Vaquero!, The Barefoot Contessa, Seven Days in May, Night of the Iguana, and Earthquake. She dated Howard Hughes, and was married to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra. She continued to act into the mid 1980s, but she suffered 2 strokes in 1986 that left her partially paralyzed. She would pass away four years later of pneumonia at the age of 67.
