Pat O'Brien made a career of playing Irish cops or priests. During his career he was in 9 films with James Cagney, including Angels With Dirty Faces, The Fighting 69th, and Ragtime (the last film for both). He played the fast talking reporter Hildy Johnson in 1931's The Front Page, Notre Dame's legendary coach in Knute Rockne, All American, and Det. Mulligan in Some Like It Hot. While not necessarily known for Westerns, he appeared in the movie Jubilee Trail, and in episodes of The Virginian and Alias Smith & Jones.

Robert Ryan hailed from Chicago, and during WWII was a Marine Corps drill instructor, as well as a boxer. He started as a playwright, and the started acting, appearing in films for Paramount and RKO, who guaranteed his contract, allowing him to enlist in the Marines. After the war, he played in films of different genres, mostly in noir films, war movies and Westerns. He was a versatile actor who could play the good guy as well as the heavy. He was also very liberal, which would put him at odds sometimes with more conservative co-stars like John Wayne. His films include The Flying Leathernecks, The Naked Spur, Beware My Lovely, Bad Day at Black Rock, Inferno, The Longest Day, Battle of the Bulge, The Dirty Dozen, The Professionals, The Wild Bunch, and Lawman. He resided in an apartment in The Dakota which he would sublet to John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He died of lung cancer at the age of 63.

Dennis Fimple was a goofy looking character actor who played Kyle Murtry, the dim-witted member of the Devil's Hole Gang on Alias Smith & Jones, and appeared in episodes of MASH, Gomer Pyle, Petticoat Junction, The Rockford Files, and had recurring roles on Matt Houston and Harts of the West. He was also in the films The Apple Dumpling Gang, Goin' South, Kink Kong (1976), Maverick, and House of 1000 Corpses.

Adam Beach is a Canadian Saulteaux Indian, and has played many Native American roles, including a Navajo code talker in Windtalkers, Ira Hayes (who was one of the Marines who raised the second flag on Iwo Jima) in Flags of Our Fathers, the Comanche renegade Blue Duck in Comanche Moon, Dr. Charles Eastman in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, and Victor Joseph in the acclaimed Smoke Signals.

Also today:

Susan Kohner (1936-) is the daughter of producer Paul Kohner and actress Lupita Tovar. She won a Golden Globe for best supporting Actress for the role of Sarah Jane, a light skinned Black passing for White in the 1959 remake of Imitation of Life. She also appeared in The Gene Krupa Story, To Hell and Back, and The Last Wagon, as well as episodes of Wagon Train, Temple Houston, and Rawhide. She had a short career (9 yrs), retiring in 1964 when she married German fashion designer John Weitz. She is the mother of directors Chris and Paul Weitz (American Pie, Twilight;New Moon).

Liked Susan Kohner in The Last Wagon, and Dennis Fimple in Alias S&J. Of course Robert Ryan created many great roles, foremost among them (well, to me) Deke Thornton in The Wild Bunch.

Also born 0n 11/11: Bibi Andersson, known for her roles in Ingmar Bergman flicks, but to Western fans from Duel at Diablo. I saw her in a play many years ago. And Leonardo DiCaprio, who as a very young man was in The Quick and the Dead and who will be seen soon in the Tarantino Western Django Unchained.

RTA: Just read that Dennis Fimple's father was named Elmer... Elmer Fimple. Wow.
