Will Rogers was a cowboy, a trick roper, circus performer, humorist, and acted in about 70 movies. he was born into a Cherokee family, himself being about 1/4 Cherokee, and became interested in cowboys at an early age. His cowboy skills led him to perform rope tricks in wild west shows, circuses, and Vaudeville, blending in humor and social commentary. He died in an airplane crash with aviator Wiley Post.
Gig Young was born Byron Barr, and appeared in movies under his real name or uncredited until 1943. He was known for drunks, and was nominated for an Oscar twice for Come Fill the Cup and Teacher's Pet. Ironically, he was an alcohlic in real life. He was one of the stars of the TV series The Rogues, and later won an Oscar for the film They Shoot Horses, Don't They? His career went into decline because of his alcoholism, and in 1978, 3 weeks after his 4th marriage, he and his wife were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.
Cameron Mitchell was born in Dallastown, PA, which is the crosstown rival to hometown, Red Lion. His first film was They Were Expendable, and he appeared in The Tall Men, Carousel, Death of a Salesman, and many Italian films. On TV, he appeared in episodes of The High Chaparall, Bonanza, and SWAT. He died of lung cancer at the age of 75.
Martin Balsam is best known as the detective Arbogast in Psycho, and as Archie Bunker's business partner on Archie Bunker's Place. He won an Oscar for his role in A Thousand Clowns, and was also in On The Waterfront, 12 Angry Men, The Carpetbaggers, Tora!Tora!Tora!, All the Presidents Men, Hombre, and Murder on the Orient Express. He died of a heart attack at the age of 76.
Sam Shepard is a playwright as well as an actor. He appeared in some lesser known movies before playing Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff. He then appeared in the movies Paris Texas, Baby Boom, Steel Magnolias, The Pelican Brief, Streets of Laredo, Blackhawk Down, Swordfish, and Blackthorn. His birthday is Nov. 5, but we'll celebrate it early.

Gig Young was the eternal 30-40 year old. Like so many actors, he just never seemed to age through the decades. During his career, he played supporting roles to some of Hollywood's leading men. He worked with John Wayne in Wake Of The Red Witch, with Cary Grant in , That Touch Of Mink, with Clark Gable in Teacher's Pet and With Rock Hudson in Strange Bedfellows. He also supported Elvis Presley in Kid Galahad. The Oscar he finally won for They Shoot Horses, Don't They, with Jane Fonda, proved to be the " kiss of death" for Gig's career. He was given the role of the Waco Kid in Mel Brooks, Blazin Saddles, but was fired because he was having drunken tremors on the set!! I met him once at the airport where I worked, shortly after he won his Oscar and was shocked at his appearance, without the makeup. Instead of looking like the suave 40 year old that he appeared to be in the film, it was obvious that he was in his 60's. I asked him what he was doing in Asheville N.C. and he told me that he was visiting some friends. It was only after his death, that I realized he was visiting his parents in Waynesville N.C. Gig is buried under his real name, Byron Barr, in the family plot there.
Cameron Mitchell had the role of the young tough guy down pat. I watched him in The Tall Men with Clark Gable and Jane Russell and in The Garden Of Evil with Gary Cooper and Susan Heyward. Even in middle age, he was still playing the tough guy in Hombre with Paul Newman. I think his role of Buck, the brother of John Cannon( Leif Erickson) in High Chaparral gave him his first chance to display other facets of his acting talents. Cameron Mitchell was a natural western actor and there seems to be a shortage of that type of actors today.
