Howdy Manco!!

Born the son of Vaudeville comedian, Ed Wynn, Keenan Wynn appeared in hundreds of films and t.v. series between 1934-1986. Encouraged by his father to become an actor, Keenan would go on to appear in many great films like, The Man In The Grey Flanneled Suit, .Dr Strangelove, A Hole In The Head etc. His role of Hezekiah in The Great Race with Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemon and Ross Elliott was unforgettable. He was especially good in westerns, like The War Wagon, Night Of The Grizzley, Welcome To Hard Times, as the Mexican desperado in McKenna's Gold and he even played the role of the Sheriff in Sergio Leone's classic, Once Upon A Time In The West. He took on the role of a construction boss in the 1959 t.v. series, The Troubleshooters and later was a regular on the hit series, Dallas. Keenan could handle comedy just as easily, as in Flubber, Herbie Rides Again and could combine both drama and comedy in his role, as in his role of Zar, in Welcome To Hard Times. He was one of the very best character actors in Hollywood during his career and one of my favorite actors during his life. I still enjoy watching his films today and that's about as good a compliment as an actor can be paid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Howdy Nightlinger!!

Sorry about that pard!! You're correct, Ross Elliott played the Sheriff on The Virginian, if memory serves. Don't know why his name popped into my head. Guess the ole memory just slipped another cog!!

The first movie I'd seen Keenan Wynn in was Herbie Rides Again as Alonzo Hawk, who was trying to force Helen Hayes from an old firehouse (her dear departed husband was a fire chief) so he could build a highrise, and gets driven (no pun intended) to near madness by Herbie the Love Bug and a posse of VW Beetles! It was years later when I found out he played the character Alonzo Hawk about 20 earlier in The Absent Minded Professor. My absolute favorite scene with Keenan Wynn is in Dr. Strangelove, when the US Army overruns the airbase where Slim Pickens' bomber attack was launched from, because the commanding officer (Sterling Hayden) went crazy. When the get through, Wynn finds Peter Sellers (as the British liaison), and Sellers tries to convince Wynn to let him call the President in an attempt to stop the bombers. Sellers breaks into a soda machine to get change to make the phone call, and Wynn, in his deadpan voice, relents, saying "If you're wrong, you'll have to answer to the Coca-Cola Company."
