Howdy Manco!!

Born Jules Guy in Powderly, Muhlenberg County Kentucky. (the same county immortalized in song by John Prine, as the place .Mr Peabody's coal train "done hauled it away") His mother was the sister to Ike Everly, the father of The Everly Brothers.
James Best first appeared in an uncredited role in One Way Street in 1950. He then appeared in Cole Younger Gunfighter and hasn't looked back since. Writer, Musician,Artist, Actor, College Professor, you name it, he's done it. Best has appeared in over 250 guest appearances on t.v. during his career, beginning with The Adventures Of Kit Carson, back in 1953, and one that everyone should remember, as the out of work, guitar player on the Andy Griffith Show. He's had roles in many films of note, like Winchester 73, Shenandoah, Seven Angry Men, Commanche Territory, The Quick Gun, Hooper, Fire Creek, Sounder, Ode To Billy Joe and Forbidden Planet. He has taught at the Universiy of Central Florida and drama at the University Of Mississippi. Most folks will remember James best( pardon the pun) for his role of Sheriff Roscoe .P. Coltrane on the 70's/80's t.v. series, The Dukes Of Hazzard. In semi-retirement now, James currently lives in Hickory N.C., which I was unaware of. Hickory is about 80 miles from where I live and if I knew ole Roscoe wouldn't take a shot at me, I might just drop in and ask him if he's had any "horrendous collisons" lately. Ole James is 86 years old today.
Happy Birthday .Mr Best and thanks for all the great memories!!!!!

James Best is a terrific actor. If you grew up knowing him only as Roscoe, you might not recognize by looks in his early stuff, but you'll know that voice! He said the basis for characterization of Roscoe was to play him like a 12 year old kid. He also did a pretty good Jimmy Stewart imitation in the movie Hooper.
