Howdy Manco!!

Raymond Bailey was a character actor, who appeared in films like, Vertigo with Jimmy Stewart and No Time For Sergeants with Andy Griffith. He had a flair for comedy and was selected to play the part of the wealthy banker, Milburn Drysdale on the long running t.v. series, The Beverly Hillbillies.

Lucian Ballard was a cinematographer or director of photography on many classic westerns, such as Hour Of The Gun, True Grit, The Sons Of Katie Elder, Outlaw and many others. He was also an inventor, who created a light, mounted on the camera, that shines directly on the face of the subject and eliminates blemishes.

Actor Bill Quinn began his career in the 1920's during the silent screen era. He appeared in such films as How To Frame A Figg with Don Knotts and Star Trek IV, The Final Frontier. He was a regular on the t.v. sitcoms, All In The Family and will probably be best remembered as Sweeney, the bartender, on The Rifleman.

Stewart Grainger was a Hollywood leading man from the 1940's through the 1960's. He appeared in such films as King Solomon's Mines, North To Alaska with the Duke, Rampage At Apache Wells, and the role of Old Surehand in several films. He also replaced John McIntire as the owner of the Shiloh Ranch on the t.v. series, The Virginian. A bit of trivia about Stewart Grainger, he was forced to change his name as an actor, because his real name was James Stewart.

Richard Eyer was a child star actor, who appeared in over 100 t.v. shows during the 50's, like Lassie, Gunsmoke etc, but will be best remembered as the son of the stagecoach line owner in Stagecoach West.

Clay O'Brien is another child star actor of the 60's and 70's, who appeared in The Cowboys, and the t.v. series of the same name and, The Apple Dumpling Gang, but will probably be best remembered as one of the 2 sons of John Wayne in the western, Cahill, U.S. Marshal, with Gary Grimes.

I didn't recognize Raymond Bailey in that picture, because he's not wearing a hairpiece!

Stewart Granger I remember as Allen Quartermain in King Solomon's Mines and as Andre Moreau in Scaramouche, as well as Duke's pard George Pratt in North to Alaska.

Clay O'Brien went on to become a rodeo star under his real name, Clay Cooper. He's a 7 time World Champion in Team Roping.

Lucien Ballard also photographed The Wild Bunch - had to mention that.

Also born on May 6: rootin' tootin' cowboy Orson Welles! Well, Orson did play the bad guy-rancher, tormenting Jeff Chandler's justice-seeking lawman, in the modern Western Man in the Shadows.

Howdy Art!!

Orson Wells was many things in his lifetime. Leading actor, director, radio broadcaster, but it is the Mercury Theater broadcast of H.G.Wells', War Of The Worlds, on Halloween night, 1938, that he will always be remembered for. He was supposed to tell listeners in advance, that it was just a play, but he failed to do this and the resulting panic jammed C.B.S's switchboards and got ole Orson's big ole butt in some very hot water at the time. Although he changed the name of the President in the play, he nevertheless had the actor imitate the voice of Franklin.D. Roosevelt and the folks that heard it assumed that it was a real attack on Earth by the Martians. It was this radio play that carried Orson on to fame!!
